Narrow Sofa Table
This narrow sofa table is a stylish piece for behind the sofa or use as a console table in the hall. Easily adjust the dimensions for height or length to fit perfectly in your space. Inspired by a console table as seen on Houzz. If you don't have tools to cut curves, substitute straight boards.
Directions
-
Make and Assemble Legs
Cut the legs and feet from a 4x4. Trace and cut out the pattern for the feet with a band saw. Drill 1 1/2" pocket holes in the front and back of the legs (top and bottom). Mark the center of the legs and feet and secure together with wood glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws.
Note: Instead of cutting curves on the feet, consider making a 45 deg cut on the ends for simple style. If making the table to go along a wall, shorten the feet to 11 1/4" (from 14 1/2"). -
Attach Rail
Cut the rail from a 2x4. Drill 1 1/2" pocket holes in each end (under side). Mark the centers of the rail ends and feet. Secure the rail to the feet with wood glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws.
-
Assemble Skirt
Cut the skirt pieces from the 1x3's. Drill 3/4" pocket holes in each end of the 7 3/4" skirt pieces. Also drill 3/4" pocket holes in the skirt pieces to attach to the top later. Assemble the skirt together using wood glue and 1 1/4" pocket holes.
Note: The short pocket hole driver is useful while assembling the skirt. If necessary, drill through the backside of the skirt into the 7 3/4" pieces. -
Attach Skirt to Top
Cut the top piece from the 2x12. Center the skirt onto the underside of the top piece. Use wood glue and 1 1/4" pocket hole screws to secure the skirt to the top.
-
Attach Legs to the Top
Center the legs onto the top piece. Use wood glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws to secure the legs to the table top.
-
Cut and Attach Arch
Trace 2 arches onto the remaining 2x12. Use a band saw, scroll saw or jig saw to cut out the arches. Sand the arches smooth. Center an arch to a leg and top, attach with wood glue and 1 1/4" brad nails. Repeat for the second arch.
-
Add Molding
Trace 4 molding patterns onto some of the remaining 4x4. Cut out the molding pieces with a band saw. Sand the pieces smooth. Attach to the front and back of the leg pieces with wood glue and 1 1/4" brad nails. The molding pieces will cover up the leg pocket holes. Alternately you can use store bought molding.
Sand the narrow sofa table smooth, ending with 120-150 grit sandpaper. Stain the table as desired and protect with top coat/polyurethane.
